Selected Seasons soundtrack – 2021.

Selected Seasons is a made up of of soundtrack pieces from the Great Year and the 72 Seasons, a four-channel video installation completed in 2021. This four screen 80 minute work contrasts a speculative reading of the next 26,000 years, as measured by the axial precession of the earth, with the 72 years of the current median human lifespan. The Seasons panels are divided into broad subjective categories, ways to subjectively imagine lived experience. Air, Sleep, Exile, Rivers, Drugs, Distances and Skin. They are produced primarily from sample instruments designed using new and archival field recordings from locations the category scenes refer to in the onscreen text and also model in the imagery, rooms, houses, mountains, nearby and across the world, collected over fifteen years.

Selected Circumferences soundtrack – 2021.

Selected Circumferences is a soundtrack collection from the Circumference twin channel video work completed in 2021. These pieces like the video work they come from aim to arrive at a point of stasis. While there are (sometimes busy) timbral and tonal shifts that occur, beneath the surface layer they remain simple harmonic ideas that present themselves with bones laid bare, hoping to act as points of static reflection like the portrait format video compositions they accompany.

The twelve piece video work is constructed from five minute sections on two alternating screens, a tik and then a tok, to make up an hour or alternatively to represent the calendar months of a year. The sound is composed from the archive or material built up over the twelve month period of production and contains reworked and reimagined elements of previous live performances and sketches alongside newer material from field recordings made during the year. The scrapbook collage basis of both the raw visual, textual and sound material led to the piece developing a diary like shape as it came together. Unavoidably as this period was mid 2020 through mid 2021 it became a type of journal of the plague year. Writing this now toward the end of 2021 I can hear in these selected fragments the quality of that time, the wrenching rollercoaster of day to day uncertainty inside the stillness of mostly domestic confinement.
